Briefing[]
Robert: All right, everyone. You've got a tough mission in front of you this time. Keep that in mind as you listen to Lilia's explanation.
Lilia: Amelia, read us our orders.
Amelia: Yes, ma'am. All Delta units will be dispatched to Area OB-45. Attack the new air defense system the enemy is developing, as well as its testing grounds. That is all.
Holst: New air defense system? Did we hear about that from one of our operatives?
Lilia: This battle plane is based on intel from the late General Bolotnikov.
Jamie: What, him? Can we trust what he says?
Lilia: We've verified that the testing grounds exist. So, yes, we can trust him. The enemy has some impressive technology, you know. If this anti-air system is for real, we'll be in deep trouble.
Pedro: Don't you think it's a little risky, using planes to attack anti-air weapons?
Amelia: The testing grounds are fairly deep in enemy territory. It would take too much time to get there on land. The only way is by air.
Ruth: But they control the air, too! An attack there could be a disaster...
Lilia: That didn't stop their guys when they came after NB-53.
Ruth: ...?! (says 'Huh?!')
Lilia: I'll request some air backup for a diversion. The area next to us has the fighter squad that's closest to our targets. When you go, make a detour through there. ...It's our turn next.
John: ...About how strong would you say that fighter squad is?
Lilia: Well, I hear it's at least a full squadron, so it should be reasonably strong.
John: [smiles] That much prey for the hunter, eh? Heh heh heh...
Ruth: [angry] Uh, Rundal...?
Lilia: Anyway, if they can do it, we can, too. And if you're a true Delta, you'll show them how it's done!
Robert: I couldn't have said it better. Now go take out that new air defense system and the testing grounds, too. Good luck.
[briefing ends]
Encount (Twister)[]
[if mission is played as Ruth, Ken, or a 1st Element character, the following dialogue will be said]
Amelia: Radar signal! Code Red! Enemy!
Donald: I knew it... They've come... Okay! Dragon 4 to 6 change course and move to phase B.
Dragon: Roger!
John: Don't let them get away! take them all down!
Amelia: Viper 2! You are outside the mission zone! Return now!
John: Shut up! I'll take all these suckers down! (leaves the battlefield to confront the enemy squadron)
Amelia: Viper 2!
Donald: Not quite what I predicted. Never mind. All units commence attack!
Amelia: Enemy is incoming! Intercept! One enemy unit has broken away! Viper 2, you are outside the mission zone!
Ruth: (if not being played as) We've got to protect the strike team! Crow, no prisoners! Wolf, what are you doing? Going after them alone is suicide! Wolf!
Ken: (only if a 1st Element character is being played as) Lilly, cool it! Wolf does his own thing. Leave him to it.
Donald: (when shot down) No time to think... Punching out!
[if John is being played as, the following dialogue will be said]
Amelia: Radar signal! Code Red! Enemy!
Donald: I knew it... They've come... Okay! Dragon 4 to 6 change course and move to phase B.
Dragon: Roger!
Donald: Remaining Dragon units, move to intercept enemy!
Dragon: Roger!
Amelia: Incoming enemy! Ensure total elimination! Enemy element has disengaged. Suspect heading for OB-54.
Ruth: We've got to protect the strike team! Crow, no prisoners!
Donald: (when shot down) No time to think... Punching out!
[no more scripted dialogue, mission ends when all targets are shot down]
Pre-Mission Cutscene for Twister (Huge Wind Wall)[]
Operator: Incoming bogies! Fast!
Commandant: Identification?!
Operator: ...Echo is red! They're bandits!
Commandant: All guns! Prepare to fire!
David: This is Tough Guy! Tally on target!
Amelia: Nomad to all units! Target located! All pilots, scramble to target immediately!
David: Think I'm gonna wait for that?! ...Gotta hit 'em before they can run! Panther, Cougar! Let's go!
Collette: (not subtitled) Zipper!
Constance: Roger that!
Operator: Securing gun turret base!
Commandant: Initiate! [a Type-T2: Sickle is activated and it creates a large tornado]
David: (not subtitled) Argh!! Bug out!
Collette and Constance: Fox 2! [they launch missiles at the tornado but it does not work]
David: ...Being sucked in! [gets sucked into the tornado and his plane explodes without killing him]
Amelia: Python 1 is off radar! That's...the enemy's...new weapon...?
[cutscene ends with the E-3C Sentry and Alfa MiG-29SMTs flying into the combat zone and cautiously avoiding the tornadoes]
Mission[]
Amelia: Nomad, calling all units. Your target is the enemy's anti-aircraft system.
Collette: Panther to all units. All clear above the clag.
Constance: No need for anyone up here!
Operator: Activation successful. Alpha, beta and gamma pulse levels stabilized. Activation commencing in 20. One enemy fighter down.
Professor: That proves the effectiveness of the anti-aircraft capabilities.
Commandant: The enemy's still coming in hard. Wipe them all out or this experiment is over with!
Collette: This is Panther. Tally on bandit at angels 10 (3000 meters. in the PAL version). Requesting permission to engage.
Constance: Hey! Leave some for me!
Operator: This is control. Targeting altitude confirmed at 10000 (3000 meters. in the PAL version). No change in coverage area.
Professor: Raise the power but maintain coverage area.
Operator: Roger! Output power, increasing in 10s with my count. We're maxed out at 100. Full power. Status, now 50... 70... 80... 90... 100... Output at maximum. Commencing continuous operation.
[if neither Ken nor Jamie is being played as, the following seven lines will be said]
Jamie: Huh? Where's Wolf, missy? Has he high-tailed it back?
Ken: Neg! Wolf is engaged with bandit reinforcements.
Jamie: Engaged?! Alone?!
Ken: Yeah.
Jamie: Well that's just like him.
Ken: It's cool! I can take care of anything Wolf can.
Jamie: Missy, Crow! I'm counting on you!
[if Ken is being played as, the following eleven lines will be said]
Jamie: Huh? Where's Wolf, missy?
Ruth: Ah! Er...! Wolf's...
Jamie: What's up?! You're acting strange!
Ruth: Ah!...
Jamie: Has he high-tailed it back?
Ruth: Negative! ...Wolf is...engaged with bandit interceptors.
Jamie: Engaged?! Alone?!
Ruth: Yes.
Jamie: Well it sure is like that son of a gun...
Ruth: I'll take up Wolf's position!
Jamie: Okay Crow, Ruth! I'm counting on you!
[if Jamie is being played as, the following three lines will be said]
Ruth: ...Wolf is...engaged with bandit interceptors.
Ken: Yeah. It's cool! I can take care of anything Wolf can.
Ruth: Yes. I'll take up Wolf's position!
[when the player flies near the first Type-T2: Sickle, the following two lines are said]
Operator: Enemy craft is approaching alpha zone.
Commandant: Okay! Now we just let them come!
[when the player flies above the eye of the first tornado, the following three lines are said]
Collette: There's some turbulence up here. Right above the radar signal.
Constance: Are there...bandits down there?
Amelia: Fly through the tornado! Suspect enemy at your location!
[when the player flies through the eye of the first tornado, the following three lines are said]
Commandant: Enemy infiltration! Where did he come from?!
Operator: Dragon 1, move in to assist please.
Dragon Leader: Negative! He is in the weeds! I can't follow!
[when the player destroys the first Type-T2: Sickle, the following eight lines are said]
Amelia: You're through the tornado! Pull up!
Operator: No response from alpha.
Commandant: What's going on?!
Professor: How?! How did my calculations go wrong?!
Assistant: I told you, Professor!
Professor: What?!
Assistant: The system has a fatal flaw!
Professor: Shut up!
Operator: (when the player flies near the second Type-T2: Sickle) Enemy craft, approaching beta zone.
[when the player flies through the eye of the second tornado, the following two lines are said]
Operator: Enemy craft has infiltrated in a vertical dive.
Commandant: What crazy...?!!
[when the player destroys the second Type-T2: Sickle, the following three lines are said]
Amelia: You're through the tornado. Pull up!
Operator: No response from beta.
Professor: B-but... My design's...
[when the player flies near the third Type-T2: Sickle, the following two lines are said]
Operator: Enemy craft is approaching gamma zone.
Professor: If they get any closer...
Dragon Leader: (when the player flies through the eye of the third tornado) How are they getting through?!
[when the player destroys the third and last Type-T2: Sickle, the following three lines are said]
Amelia: You're through the tornado. Pull up!
Operator: It's no good! We've been wiped out.
Amelia: Destruction of all anti-aircraft ordnance confirmed. Also remove the observation base in the center of the combat zone.
Constance: (after approximately three minutes and five seconds into the mission) This is Cougar. We'll take the tail end bandit.
Collette: (after approximately three minutes and forty seconds into the mission) Ooh! How many will this make?
Constance: (after approximately four minutes and twenty seconds into the mission) Performance-related pay, isn't it?!
[when the observation base is attacked, the following five lines are said]
Professor: My calculations are always right!
Assistant: But... Can't you see? Your calculations are way off the mark.
Professor: Hmm? Where are they off?
Assistant: Not all of the systems can function as anti-aircraft weaponry!
Professor: Shut up!
[when only two targets are left, the following four lines are said]
Assistant: Professor! You're a brilliant scientist, but...
Professor: Yes?
Assistant: It's important to listen to other people's opinions. I quit.
Professor: What...?
Professor: (after all targets are destroyed) Get out of here! Hey, you! The experiment is over! Get out! Quick...! -explosion-
[mission ends]
Debriefing[]
[in meeting room]
Bob: [smiles] Oh, look what the cat dragged in! Aren't you dead yet?
Jamie: [angry] Why, you! Can't you show a little concern for a subordinate?
Bob: At your age, you're hardly a subordinate. And when I do show concern, you just get mad, anyway.
Jamie: [calms down] Doh! You got me there...
Bob: Well, go ahead. What was today's catch?
Jamie: [laughs] A gosh darn tornado! Those varmints made a machine that creates 'em! Of course, I smashed it to bits.
Bob: [frowns] Tornadoes? A weather controller? Sheesh, I gotta hand it to those guys. They sure have their share of ingenuity.
Jamie: [smiles] Are you kidding? I can hardly see the use in such a contraption. Can't they come up with something more practical?
Ruth: [smiles] Excuse me, may I sit here?
Jamie: Oh, hello, ma'am! This spot has your name on it!
Ruth: Thank you.
Jamie: [frowns] By the way, ma'am... Your name was Valentine, wasn't it?
Ruth: [frowns] Yes, it is.
Jamie: There wouldn't happen to be any other pilots in your family? Not in the militia, but in the military?
Ruth: There is, in fact. My father was in the air force.
Jamie: [smiles] Your father?! His name isn't Richard, is it?
Ruth: In fact, it is...
Jamie: [delightfully] You hear that, partner? Heavens to Betsy, it really is a small world!
Bob: [delightfully] You said it. Who would've thought Richard had a daughter, and that she'd join the Delta Squadron!
Ruth: [offscreen] So, you knew my father?
Bob: You bet we did! He was that old fart's subordinate, back in the day! And I serviced his plane.
Jamie: [smiles] Both Robert and I taught back in the official air force. Then he served under my command in the Delta Squadron.
Ruth: [appears onscreen] So you formed an Element with my father, with you as Captain and Williams as Lead?
Jamie: Yup, and what a pain in the ass they were! They flew so close to me when we did formations, I thought I'd crap my pants!
Bob: Those two were an engineer's nightmare. They pushed their engines past the limit, and I was left to deal with the results. But they were damn good pilots. They cooked their engines to a nice golden-brown. Robert was on the career track until he formed the Delta Squadron for this old fart, then he got stuck as 2nd Lieutenant.
Jamie: [frowns] It wasn't all for me! Although I admit I really owe him one for creating a squadron where I could fly a prop-plane.
Bob: [smiles] Richard came along to join his friends in the Delta Squadron. He always said it was the best team on Earth.
Ruth: [delightfully] That's what he told me, too. And that's why I came here. I wanted to see what the "best team on Earth" was like.
Bob: [amused] Well, now it's just a band of bad-boy soldiers and old geezers...
Ruth: [disappointed] ...
Bob: [delightfully] We should have ourselves a long talk about your dad one of these days. We could invite Robert along, too.
Ruth: [delightfully] ...Uh, yeah...
Jamie: [smiles] Oh, and ma'am, you ought to ask Robert and Harry about your father. They'll have plenty of memories to share with you.
Ruth: [smiles] I'll do that. Goodbye, then. [leaves]
Jamie: [frowns] So the little missus came to Delta in her father's footsteps. I wonder what she was hoping to find?
Bob: [frowns] Dunno...But I bet it wasn't an old curmudgeon like you!
Jamie: [angry] Aw, shut yer trap, you old chatterbox!
[debriefing ends]
Interlude[]
During the long, drawn-out war, the E.D.A.F. saw the arrival of many asylum-seekers and refugees from the tyranny of the O.C.C.
Information from these people and covert-ops reports all clearly showed E.D.A.F. HQ that the O.C.C.'s big offensive was imminent.
But taking this information as unreliable at best, the hard-nosed commanders prioritized their own military objectives, never questioning their optimistic view that the lull would continue.
So when the O.C.C.'s huge, land-based attack came, it took the E.D.A.F. by surprise and consequently was very successful.
But the heroic fighting and defensive tactics of the front-line E.D.A.F. units, coupled with delays in the O.C.C. supply lines, exhausted the invading troops and put a halt to their advance.
Hearing of the O.C.C.'s predicament, E.D.A.F. HQ ordered a counterattack. Large-scale operations were set in motion.
