Briefing

Robert: Everyone here? It's been a while since we've had the whole squadron together. Lilia, Amelia? Give us the sit rep.

Amelia: Yes, sir. Our mission is to capture the enemy's air transport squadron. Our recon tells us they're taking on supplies today in Area OB-33. Here are your orders. All elements depart for Area OB-33. Clear out the enemies around the transports, then guide the transports back into friendly territory. That is all.

Jamie: [grins] So we steal their transport ships.

Lilia: [winks] Exactly. So don't attack the transports unless you hear otherwise.

Alex: [smiles] You need everyone for this dinky job?

Lilia: [happy] You're welcome to try capturing the transport fleet all by yourself. We would sure appreciate it.

John: Give me a break...

Lilia: [turns neutral] The 101st Fighter Squad will be backing us up on this one. As always, watch out for friendly fire.

Ruth: Are you saying our element, with four fighter jets, can't handle this?

Ken: ...You're hiding something.

Lilia: [angry] Oh, shut up already! Just go!

Robert: All elements deploy at once. Take care of the enemies surrounding the transports and bring 'em in. We're counting on you.

[briefing ends]

Mission

Amelia: Guard the escape vessel Freedom as it disengages from the enemy. The air currents are rough beneath the clouds. Fighter jets can't handle them! Watch your altitude.

John: (if playing as Ken) Nomad... what's up?

Amelia: (if playing as Ken) There's no time to explain. Details will follow.

John: (if playing as Ken) Roger. We just shoot 'em all down, right?

Ken: (if playing as Ruth) Wasn't it supposed to be an aircraft carrier?

Amelia: (if playing as Ruth) I'll explain more later. Just follow orders for now.

Ken: (if playing as Ruth) Roger...

Ruth: (if playing as John) Nomad! Your data's wrong! What's going on?

Amelia: (if playing as John) I can't explain now. Please follow your orders.

Ruth: (if playing as John) Fine! I copy!

Jamie: (if playing as Rick or Alex) You'll give us the details later, right?

Amelia: (if playing as Rick or Alex) Yes. I'll explain everything.

Jamie: (if playing as Rick or Alex) Then we have no choice. C'mon, Rush Hour, Nonstop!

Rick: (if playing as Jamie or Alex) Roger that.

Alex: (if playing as Rick) Roger!

Brian: (if playing as Holst) What the hell? That's not what I'm hearing!

Amelia: (if playing as Holst) There's no time to explain. Please follow your orders.

Brian: (if playing as Holst) Why?!

Pedro: (if playing as Holst) Just do it, Sprog. We'll hear more later.

Brian: (if playing as Holst) Roger...

Amelia: The enemy's starting to hide under the clouds.

David: I'll get 'em before they can! [chases after the Type-B7: Spiral which is codenamed 'Radetzky' and the Type-B8: Arrows as they dive under the clouds]

Amelia: Python 1, maintain altitude! It's dangerous beneath the clouds!

[when the player flies close to the Radetzky and the Type-B8: Arrows, the following two lines will potentially be said]

Operator: Enemy within firing range.

Commandant: Launch all Spiral Spears!

[the following two lines can also potentially be said when the player flies close to the Radetzky and the Type-B8: Arrows]

Operator: Loading preparations complete.

Commandant: Fire away!

David: M-my plane can't take it! Arrgh! [his plane explodes when he flies under the clouds, though he survives]

Amelia: ...Python 1 has lost IFF contact...

Collette: Lead!

Constance: Lead!

Amelia: The enemy is starting to surface.

Collette: Where are they?

Constance: I can't see them!

Amelia: Python 2 and 3, right under you! Evade!

Collette: Cougar, they're coming from below! [gets hit by a Type-B8: Arrow]

Constance: Too late! Aaack! [gets hit by a Type-B8: Arrow]

Amelia: All Python units have been destroyed...

[the following two lines will potentially be said if the player flies close to the Radetzky and the Type-B8: Arrows]

Operator: Spiral Spears ready.

Commandant: Right, launch all six of 'em!

Elbow: (if playing as any character except for Ruth, Jamie, or Holst) Elbow Leader here.

Ruth: (if playing as Ken or John) Delta Squadron, Lilly!

Jamie: (if playing as Rick or Alex) Delta Squadron, Shogun here!

Holst: (if playing as Brian) Delta Squadron, Duke.

Elbow: (if playing as any character except for Ruth, Jamie, or Holst) So you're Delta. I've heard about you. Let's stick close together, okay?

Ruth: (if playing as Ken or John) Roger!

Jamie: (if playing as Rick or Alex) Roger!

Holst: (if playing as Brian) Roger.

Elbow: (if playing as Ken or John) You may not have much experience, but we'll follow your lead.

Ruth: (if playing as Ken or John) Thank you!

Elbow: (if playing as Rick or Alex) It's an honor to be able to fight alongside you.

Jamie: (if playing as Rick or Alex) Ho ho ho! Pretty fancy words for a propless feller!

Elbow: (if playing as Brian) Your techniques are no match for ours. We're counting on you.

Holst: (if playing as Brian) Just leave it to us.

Amelia: (when the Radetzky dives under the clouds before the bolts are destroyed) They're hiding beneath the clouds! Don't go in too far after them!

Amelia: (when the Radetzky surfaces before the bolts are destroyed) The enemy is surfacing! Watch out!

General: What, no one wants to follow me?! All right, then! You! Let’s go!

Retainer: Y-yes, sir!

Pilot: Freedom, here. Come in, Delta. Repeat, Freedom here...

Amelia: Nomad here. What's your status?

Pilot: Now performing final disengage checks. Keep it up.

Amelia: Roger.

Elbow: Where's their escort ship?!

General: Bah, no good here, either! Guess I'll just come in from here!

Retainer: All routes to the Freedom are blocked. What shall we do?

General: We'll force our way in, head on!

Retainer: Wh-what? W-wait a minute!

Pilot: Freedom here. We're all set. Now entering disengage sequence.

Copilot: Output supplies stable. All systems go.

Pilot: Roger. Release the bolts.

Copilot: Roger that. Releasing... I can't!

Pilot: What are you doing?!

Copilot: I can't release them!

Pilot: Switch the controls from A to B and try again!

Copilot: No good! None of the controls work!

Pilot: Dammit! They’re coming! If only we can release those bolts… There’s really no way? Maybe if Delta...?

Amelia: Nomad to all units! Freedom has told us where the escape vessel’s bolts are. I’ll forward the data. Destroy the bolts and cut the craft loose.

General: This isn't over! I'm not dead yet!

Retainer: Phew... I thought we were done for.

Pilot: Freedom to Delta. Evacuation complete. We’ll try for as much time as we can, but… it won’t be much.

Amelia: Roger. How much time can you get?

Copilot: I'll lock all three gates between us.

Pilot: How long can we hold out?

Copilot: With three gates? About 300 seconds...

Pilot: Delta, we've got five minutes, tops!

Amelia: Roger. Setting time to 300 seconds. Starting countdown.

Copilot: (when the countdown timer has 3 minutes and 16 seconds left on it) The first gate has been breached! There's two left!

Copilot: (when the countdown timer has 1 minute and 39 seconds left on it) The second gate has been breached! There's one left!

Copilot: (when the countdown timer has 23 seconds left on it) The last gate has been breached! We're done for!

[if the player does not destroy all three bolts before the countdown timer has no time left on it, the mission will fail and the following three lines will be said]

Copilot: They've invaded...

Foot Soldier: Resistance is useless!

Pilot: We've failed... Arrgh! -static-

Amelia: (after one bolt has been destroyed) Bolt destroyed. Two bolts remaining.

Amelia: (after two bolts have been destroyed) Bolt destroyed. One bolt remaining.

[when the player destroys all three bolts, the countdown timer is removed and the following dialogue is said]

[the following three lines will potentially be said if playing as a 3rd Element character]

Pilot: Now set course from B to C.

Copilot: Roger. Setting course to Point C.

Pilot: Full speed ahead! Let's get outta here!

Commandant: The general's rebelled, eh? Set all ships' control mode to Pursue! We'll show no mercy. Don't let our data get into their hands!

Operator: Roger. Changing mode.

Commandant: Hide under the clouds and take control from there! Have all Tashkent attack ships pursue from under the clouds. Change course from A to B. Go from cruising speed to attack speed!

Operator: Roger course change. Speed increased to attack speed.

Elbow: Who's aboard that thing? ...Huh? Refugees? We need their information--don't crash on me!

Operator: Added new aerial target.

Commandant: Uptrim, ascend, and pursue!

Operator: Roger. Ascending.

[when the Freedom takes damage from the Radetzky's Spiral Spears, the following eight lines are said]

Copilot: Whoa!

Pilot: Check our damage!

Copilot: It's insignificant. We should have no problems flying. Engine output down! I can't get away!

Pilot: Dammit! We have no choice! Dive into the clouds!

Copilot: But under the clouds...

Pilot: Who cares? Just don't go too deep!

Copilot: Roger!

Amelia: All Delta units, enter air holding pattern and provide back-up.

[if the Freedom takes more hits, the following two lines will be said]

Elbow: If the escape vessel gets hit, it's all over!

Copilot: The plane can't take it any more! Let's surface! The plane won't stand for this!

Amelia: (when the Freedom takes even more hits) The enemy's attack is escalating. Eliminate them immediately.

[if the Freedom takes too many hits, the mission will fail and the following two lines will be said]

Copilot: I-I've lost control! So it's come to this... Nomad, Freedom is going down!

Amelia: Come in, Freedom! Do you copy?

Commandant: Evacuate! We're going down! The Radetzky is sinking!

Amelia: Freedom, exit from enemy airspace confirmed. Freedom is now entering friendly airspace! Head from Point 30 to 31.

Pilot: Roger, copy that. Thanks!

[mission ends]

Debriefing

[in briefing room]

David: [angry] Okay, let's hear it, Lilia.

Lilia: [angry] ...

David: I scraped the bottom of the barrel buying that plane, and now it's gone, but to what end? What was that mission's real purpose?

Lilia: It was an asylum mission. Somebody wanted to defect, so we facilitated the escape.

David: A defector? You sent out all those planes just for that?

Lilia: [turns neutral] Indeed. The defector was a key figure, you see. So much so that defection wouldn't have been possible without our assistance.

David: A key figure? Who in the world...?

Lilia: Have you heard of General Bolotnikov?

Jamie: [angry] Bolotnikov?! The decorated General of the OCC army! Why would that old fart come to us?!

Ken: A General? From the OCC?!

Lilia: [winks] Yes, he is a decorated OCC General. But now he's right here, being questioned. [Lilia and Ken both turn angry] Second Lieutenant Thomas? Are you okay?

Ken: An enemy, here? Right here in this base?!

Lilia: Hey, just calm down. Bolotnikov has requested asylum. He's not the enemy any longer. In return for his protection, he can offer us inside information on OCC![sic] Surely you can understand the value of that?

Ken: He is the enemy! Once OCC, always OCC! I won't stop until they're all dead! Get outta my way!

Lilia: Somebody stop Lieutenant Thomas! There's no telling what he may do!

[scene cuts to a hallway]

Ruth: [angry] Lieutenant Thomas!

Ken: [neutral] Ruth, stay outta my way. He doesn't deserve protection!

Ruth: Whatever his reasons, he has surrendered to us! He is not an enemy, which makes him just like you or me!

Ken: [turns angry] You're wrong. He is the enemy! And I won't rest until every last one of them is dead!

Ruth: Pull yourself together, Lieutenant Thomas! I never took you for a murderer! But that's where you're headed with this!

Ken: Outta the way! They took everything from me! I have only one choice but to...

John: [seemingly puts Ken down whilst smiling] Put a lid on it, Ken.

Ken: John... You... [Seemingly taken away]

Ruth: [turns neutral] Thanks, Liutenant[sic] Rundal.

John: [turns neutral] I didn't do this to receive thanks.

Ruth: What?

John: If he pulls anything, this whole Element will be barred from flying missions. You think I could let that happen?

Ruth: ...

John: Ken's been like this ever since he got here. As Element Leader, it's your job to keep a short leash on him.

Ruth: ...I am fully aware of that.

John: Then don't let it happen again. I will not allow this kind of crap to stand in the way of my missions. [John leaves]

Ruth: [sadly] If he's been like this ever since he joined the Delta Squadron, then whatever happened to hum occurred before then? Ken Thomas, what on Earth did you go through?
