Briefing[]

Robert: We're facing some tough opponents this time. Amelia will give us the sit rep and Lilia will outline our strategy.

Amelia: Yes, sir. Our weather research vessel spotted an enemy fleet in the polar region. Here are your orders. 2nd Element, move out at once. Cooperate with the other units to destroy the enemy fleet. That is all.

Lilia: It looks like they're trying to outflank us. I think they're planning on coming through a relatively undefended area for a direct ground assault.

Brian: [angry] No way! That's not cool at all!

Lilia: That's right. It's not cool. That's why you'd better not slip up. If you let even a single one of them out of that area, the mission is a bust.

Pedro: That's one hell of a responsibility.

Lilia: You can say that again. Now get out there and take a good look around.

Holst: Look around? What do you mean?

Lilia: Just what I said, look. The fleet is well-camouflaged and won't be easy to spot.

Pedro: So they might be disguised as friendly merchant ships, say?

Amelia: No, they're disguised as a huge ice floe.

Brian: [turns neutral] You're kidding! How do you pretend to be ice?

Lilia: We've seen periscopes, so they're probably subs... Big, low-slung, with ice stuck all over them.

Holst: [smiles] Ah, I see. This is a joint exercise with our carriers, so first we have to find the bad guys, right?

Lilia: [smiles] That's right. There's a patrol ship carefully checking out each ice floe. With your help, we'll find the fleet in no time. Now get out there and sink that fleet. Otherwise, they'll be coming into our territory. Don't let any of them get past you. Got it?

Holst: [turns serious] Roger!

Robert: All right, time to move out! Sniff out that fleet and bast 'em to hell.

[briefing ends]

Mission[]

Operator: (only when the replay plays for the first time) Interior temperature critical. Now surfacing.

Amelia: Go after the enemy aircraft carriers and sink them all. They're disguised as ice floes. Fly with caution. The army's ice breakers are out there, too. Don't attack them. You can use their intel to carry out your mission. Note that we can't trust our radar for much.

Operator: Number 1 to all ships, we have an enemy on our radar.

Captain: Begin submerging and initialize camouflage.

Operator: This is Number 2. Roger. Submerging.

Operator: This is Number 3. Roger. Cooling complete--now submerging.

Sergei: I am Sergei Kinski of the Beloe Fleet. Let's face off!

[if Holst is being played as, either Pedro or Brian will interact with Sergei. The following six lines of dialogue depict Brian's potential banter with Sergei]

Brian: What are you doing here?

Sergei: You move... like a rank beginner.

Brian: This is my chance! Stop shaking now!

Sergei: This'll be too easy, but I just can't let you live to get bette[sic]...

Brian: C'mon, Emperor! You're going down!

Sergei: You young fool... let's go!

[Pedro may interact with Sergei if either Holst or Brian is being played as and the following six lines of dialogue depict Pedro's potential banter with Sergei]

Pedro: Are you this Emperor they talk about?

Sergei: Well, I wouldn't want to toot my own horn, but...

Pedro: If you mess with anyone in my element, I'm taking you down.

Sergei: Ha! You seem a worthy opponent!

Pedro: Don't play with fire if you don't want to get burned.

Sergei: Burned, eh? My techniques will leave you all wet!

[if Brian is being played as, either Holst or Pedro will interact with Sergei. The following six lines of dialogue depict Holst's potential banter with Sergei]

Holst: I've heard about this Merv Emperor.

Sergei: I find nicknames to be most convenient!

Holst: And I've heard about your skill.

Sergei: I'm honored.

Holst: But I'm in the anti-ship unit. I won't fight you.

Sergei: That's too bad! Pardon me as I shoot you down!

9th Fleet Captain: West 9 captain here. What's Delta doing here? We don't have any reports of hostiles in the area. But if Delta's here, that must mean... Let us know if there's anything we can do to help.

Captain: (only during the first time the replay plays) Still nothing? Why?

Operator: If we don't cool down, our ice camouflage will melt.

Captain: Dive, now! They're not far off!

Operator: Now cooling. Cruising at the surface. Temperature now dropping.

Observation Copter: Epsilon 3 here. Our intended target is approaching.

Observation Copter: Epsilon 2 here. What's with that huge ice floe? That can't be natural!

Operator: Cooling complete. Now submerging.

Maverick: Hey there! Are you guys Cobra? Maverick 1 here. Nice to work with you!

Brian: (if playing as Holst) Roger that. We'll do our best to help!

Holst: (if playing as Brian) Roger, Maverick Lead.

Maverick: (if Holst is being played as) Just do your best to stay alive, okay? (regardless of whether Holst or Brian is being played as, the following line will be said) So we can just leave all the naval stuff up to you?

Pedro: Oh, no, really...

Maverick: Don't be so modest! Smash 'em down for us!

Observation Copter: (if the Type-E9: Holder with the call sign 'Despina' moves close to him) Epsilon 1 here. Irregular ice floe sighting confirmed. That must be our target.

Observation Copter: Epsilon 3 here. The target's out of measurement range.

Observation Copter: Epsilon 2 here. They're getting away!

Observation Copter: (if Despina moves away from where he is) Epsilon 1 here. I'm out of observation range. Sorry 'bout that.

[after approximately three minutes into the mission, the following eleven lines are said]

Maverick: Jackie, you have to make more of an effort, too.

Jackie: What are you trying to say, Maverick?

Maverick: Bring a little extra something to the battlefield, like Nomad...

Jackie: Are you nuts? For someone like you, who would bother?!

Maverick: But that voice of yours is a total crime...

Jackie: Hey! Where do you guys think you'd be without me?!

Maverick: Even so...

Observation Chief: Jackie, Maverick! What are you chattering about?

Maverick: Urk!

Observation Chief: Don't be slacking off on the battlefield! As punishment, you'll miss out on your next shore leave!

Jackie: Aw, man!

Sergei: (if shot down) Whoa! My plane! I'll have to bail! You haven't seen the last of me! Next time, it's payback!

[when the player gets close to Despina for the first time, the following four lines are said]

Operator: Captain, why don't we give that a try?

Captain: Yes. Ready the anti-aircraft barrage.

Operator: Roger. 1 and 2 are ready to go.

Captain: Let 'em rip! (when the player gets even closer to Despina) Are the flying torpedoes ready?

[when the player gets close to the Type-E9: Holder with the call sign 'Galatea' for the first time, the following three lines are said]

Captain: They're everywhere. How are the anti-air torpedoes?

Operator: Ready for deployment, sir.

Captain: Then it's bombs away!

[when the player gets even closer to Galatea, the following two lines are said]

Captain: Ready the torpedoes!

Operator: Roger. Air torpedoes 1 through 10 are ready.

[when the player gets close to the Type-E9: Holder with the call sign 'Larissa' for the first time, the following five lines are said]

Captain: Ready Torpedoes 1 through 10!

Operator: Roger. Readying air torpedoes 1 through 10.

Operator: Anti-aircraft barrage ready for deployment!

Operator: Roger. Port and starboard are ready to go.

Captain: Fire the anti-aircraft barrage!

[when any of the three moving Type-E9: Holders are firing their torpedoes from the front or rear, the following five lines may potentially be said]

Captain: 1 and 6--fire!

Captain: 2 and 7--fire!

Captain: 3 and 8--fire!

Captain: 4 and 9--fire!

Captain: 5 and 10--fire!

Operator: (when the player is near Galatea when it is submerged) Interior temperature up. Surfacing in 30.

Operator: (when the player is near Larissa when it is submerged) Surfacing in 30.

Operator: (when the player attacks Despina) Enemy approaching. Enemy in attack mode. All hands prepare for aftershock.

Operator: (when the player attacks Galatea) Enemy passing overhead. The enemy is attacking!

Operator: (when the player attacks Galatea while it is submerged) Enemy passing overhead.

Captain: (when the player attacks Galatea while it is submerged) Hah! When we're underwater, we're invincible!

Operator: (when the player attacks Larissa while it is submerged) Enemy approaching. Enemy is at their wits' end.

Operator: (when the player attacks Larissa while it is not submerged) Enemy approaching.

Captain: (when the player attacks Larissa while it is not submerged) What's going on with the anti-aircraft guys?!

Operator: (when Despina is getting close to leaving the battlefield) Despina here. Target site confirmed. Arriving shortly.

Operator: (when Galatea is getting close to leaving the battlefield) Galatea here. Target site confirmed. Arriving shortly.

Operator: (when Larissa is getting close to leaving the battlefield) Larissa here. Target site confirmed. Arriving shortly.

Operator: (when Despina is about to exit the mission zone) Despina here. Arrived at target site. Now breaking away.

Operator: (when Galatea is about to exit the mission zone) Galatea here. Arrived at target site. Now breaking away.

Operator: (when Larissa is about to exit the mission zone) Larissa here. Arrived at target site. Now breaking away.

Amelia: (when Despina, Galatea, or Larissa is about to exit the mission zone) They're trying to leave their ship. Hurry!

[the mission fails if Despina, Galatea, or Larissa leaves the mission zone and the following dialogue is said]

Operator: (when Despina exits the mission zone) Despina to our aircraft and army. Escaped hostile territory. Mission accomplished. On to our next duty.

Operator: (when Galatea exits the mission zone) Galatea to our aircraft and army. Escaped hostile territory. Mission accomplished. On to our next duty.

Operator: (when Larissa exits the mission zone) Larissa to our aircraft and army. Escaped hostile territory. Mission accomplished. On to our next duty.

Amelia: Nomad to all units. Our mission has failed. Return to base.

Captain: (when Despina is destroyed) A-all hands... evacuate. The ship's going down! H-how could this happen...?

Operator: (when Galatea is destroyed) Get out, Captain. The ship's about to sink!

Captain: (when Galatea is destroyed) A captain always goes down with his ship!

Operator: (when Galatea is destroyed) Captain!

Operator: (when Larissa is destroyed) Fire in the engine room! This'll sink us for sure...

Captain: (when Larissa is destroyed) Damn! Have everyone evacuated!

Operator: (when Larissa is destroyed) R-Roger! All hands evacuate! Repeat, all hands evacuate!

Amelia: (when all Type-E9: Holders are destroyed) Nomad to all units, the threat has been eliminated. Return to base.

[mission ends]

Debriefing[]

[in hallway]

Holst: phew...

Harry: [offscreen] You look tired, friend.

Holst: Oh, Harry? What do you want to sell me this time?

Harry: [appears onscreen and smiles] Hold on a minute! You're more than a customer to me! I'm actually worried about you, so today I came as a friend!

Holst: [smiles] Don't throw around words like "friend" unless you really mean it. Now, spit it out. Why're you worried about me?

Harry: [frowns] Are you earning enough money?

Holst: Yeah, I did pretty well today, and I lived to fly another day.

Harry: How is your daughter?

Holst: She seems well enough, at least from what I can tell by her letters. Oh, and Harry, I need you to send her a wire transfer.

Harry: [grins] Why of course, my good friend!

Brian: [offscreen] Lead!

Holst: [frowns and Brian appears onscreen] Brian, eavesdropping doesn't become a soldier...

Brian: I'm sorry, I was just on the way back to my room. and...What's this about a wire transfer, Lead?

Harry: [frowns] Kid, you shouldn't poke around in other people's business. Surely you've learned that much by now?

Brian: Yes...I know...But...

Holst: It's my daughter.

Brian: Your daughter?! You mean somebody you're looking after for a fallen comrade?!

Holst: [smiles] No, my real daughter. I lost custody when I was divorced. I have to send money to support her.

Brian: [angry] Lead, is that why you joined the Delta Squadron?

Holst: I fight to protect the daughter who writes to me every month, and the wife I loved. The money? It's just a bonus. So... What about you Brian?

BrianNOTE: The subtitles erroneously say Holst is speaking.: [calms down] What? Me?

Holst: [frowns] Yeah, why do you fight? To become the next "Emperor"? Or are you fighting to protect something? [smiles] Once you figure that out, you'll be as good as me in no time. Heck, you'll probably go beyond me.

Brian: [smiles] Beyond you?

Holst: Give it some thought, Brian. Harry, be sure and make that wire transfer. [leaves]

Harry: [smiles] You betcha! See you later, now!

Brian: [frowns] ...

Harry: [grins] Hm? What is it, kid?

Brian: ...

Harry: You thinking about what Holst told you?

Brian: Yes.

Harry: Well, if he's made you confused, then he's done his job. It's the confusion that leads to growth.

Brian: Yes, sir! I'll give this all some serious thought!

Harry: [smiles] You go and do that, then. I won't charge you for the advice, just put a good word in for me with your friends.

Brian: Yes, sir! Thank you, sir! [leaves]

Harry: [grins] My, is he ever young...

[transitions to O.C.C. side in their hangar]

Sergei: [exhausted] phew...

Albert: [smiles] Commander.

Sergei: [calms down and smiles] Oh, Albert. I managed to make it back alive.

Albert: [frowns] I heard the Beloe fleet was hit. Was Pale Blue involved?

Sergei: [frowns] No, it was a different Squadron, that even included new recruits. They seem to be struggling just to fill in the ranks.

Albert: [angry] New recruits? The Beloe Fleet was assaulted by a squadron that had novices in its ranks?

Sergei: Yes. That EDAF is something else. The Beloe Fleet was nearly unbreakable. I don't know where they get their talent. I had thought that the only real threat was that living legend, Jamie Jones.

Albert: I heard that Jamie gets as much respect as you, Commander. Then there's that pilot in the pale blue jet... [calms down] By this time, the[sic] should be reaching their breaking point, but somehow they continue fighting.

Sergei: They fight to defend their beliefs, and to protect the ones they love. The same reason any soldier has for fighting.

Albert: Reasons for fighting?

Sergei: [grins] We're just the same. We can't allow our comrades to suffer forever, so we must fight to raise the status of people. With Beloe sunk, our navy has lost its main fleet. It is our duty to avenge this loss!

Albert: Yes, sir!

Sergei: [smiles] Okay, Albert. I think it's about time to hand out the reward we received to our comrades.

Albert: [smiles and folds his arms] Understood, Commander!

Sergei: Let's go.
