Briefing (when mission is played for the first time)[]

Robert: [smiles] Hey there, Rick. Thanks for coming.

Rick: You said it was urgent. What's up?

Lilia: We've got a special assignment. Something just for you--something out of this world. Amelia, read the orders.

Amelia: Yes, ma'am. Delta 1st Element is to be dispatched immediately. Patrol Area PC-21, where intel says the enemy has set up a fort. That is all.

Rick: A recon mission...right?

Lilia: Amelia?

Amelia: That's right. We've got word from some refugee engineer that the enemy's taken over the Kotor stronghold in Area PC-21. The likelihood is pretty low, but we can't just ignore it. That's why we're sending you to do recon. The PC region is still controlled by the enemy.

Lilia: Orders are to send a whole element, but I think we have a better chance if we send only one plane. That's why we called you.

Rick: Oh, okay. But a single plane in enemy territory...

Lilia: [smiles] Naturally, we're not asking you to do it for nothing. Harry!

Harry: [grins] My turn to shine, eh?

Rick: Harry? What are you doing here?

Harry: Hey, that's no way to greet your ol' buddy. I brought a real bad boy for you. Cost me a lot of favors, so show a little appreciation.

Rick: A bad boy?

Harry: Yup. A test interceptor that can hit Mach 3. Have you heard about it?

Rick: You mean that high-speed interceptor prototype they're keeping all hush-hush?

Harry: That's the one. It broke all the speed records for straight on, ultra high-speed flight. Just perfect for you, don't you think?

Rick: [smiles] I can't believe it!!

Lilia: That's what you'll be flying. The weapons bay is filled with surveillance equipment, but the trade-off is that it has limited firepower.

Rick: [displeased] Huh?! Are you serious?

Lilia: Yup. So if you meet a bandit, all you can do is run. But if you can take the job, you'll get a special bonus. That's not such a bad deal, is it?

Rick: ......

Amelia: There won't be any AWACS backup on this one.

Lilia: It's a true solo assignment. But we have complete confidence that you can handle it. I mean--

Rick: [calms down and smiles] ...I've got the best high-speed flight skills?

Lilia: That's right. Who knows if anyone else would even come back alive? You, on the other hand, really stand out from the rest of the pack.

Rick: [delightfully] Well, if you put it that way... Nice bonus, too... Okay, I'll do it. I'll take the job.

Lilia: That's the way. Harry, you're in charge of operating the surveillance equipment.

Harry: [smiles] Got it, miss.

Rick: [frowns] Huh? Uh, Lilia? Wasn't this mission supposed to be solo?

Lilia: [frowns] You were planning on doing recon while zooming around at Mach speeds?! If you can do that, you deserve a promotion.

Harry: [grins] One guy flies the jet and one guy does the recon. What's the problem? And I'm the only one free. So it looks like we're together on this one. ...ol' buddy.

Rick: Aw, man...

Robert: [turns neutral] All right, Rick, Harry... We're counting on you. Solo recon is dangerous, but I just know you can pull it off.

Lilia: One more thing! You have minimal weapons, so I don't want you fighting! No need to stir up the hornet's nest. Got it?

Harry: [turns serious] Roger.

Rick: [smiles] You bet.

[briefing ends]

Briefing (when mission is played a second time, this time in a new game plus)[]

Lilia: It's a true solo assignment. But we have complete confidence that you can handle it. I mean--

Rick: [smiles] ...I've got the best high-speed flight skills?

Lilia: That's right. And fighter skills, too. You have a high-speed prototype jet, don't you?

Rick: Uh-huh.

Lilia: Who knows if anyone else would even come back alive? You, on the other hand, really stand out from the rest of the pack.

Rick: [delightfully] Well, if you put it that way... Nice bonus, too... Okay, I'll do it. I'll take the job.

Lilia: One more thing! You have minimal weapons, so I don't want you fighting! No need to stir up the hornet's nest. Got it?

Harry: [turns serious] Roger.

Rick: [smiles] You bet.

[briefing ends]

Mission[]

Harry: Now to take care of that business for Lilia. You'll see how this baby flies after that. Well, you've got plenty of time. It's your decision to buy or not. Now keep on flying straight ahead, right into the battle zone. If the info she found is correct... There ought to be something. Bingo. And it looks like a damn big one, too. And according to her memo... if something should happen... Hey, I can't read with all this shaking! Okay, this way. Hmm. This info's right-on. That girl's a force to be reckoned with. Prepared all the way to the hangar gates, eh...? I'll just do what she said. Ready? Lock onto your target. You've already gotten your target info from HUD, so you're set.

Donald: Coming alone to a place like this... How very inefficient. But with those injuries... I've got to hand it to you. Interesting machine you've got there. Hard to control, though. (if he fires shots at the player) What, not attacking? What's going on? (if the player flies at a speed of at least 1600 miles per hour) It's fast, all right. I'm dying to know where they found it.

Harry: (if the player spends enough time without measuring any of the hatches) What, are you lost? Check your minimap, doofus!

Harry: (if the player spends enough time without measuring any of the hatches again) Stop playing around! Do your job and get back to base! So that's why my butt hurts. This seat's too small!

[if the player locks onto the wrong target, Harry will say any of the following five lines]

Harry: C'mon, this place is too dangerous. Let's get it over with.

Harry: Do you want this to be over or not? C'mon already!

Harry: Whoa, keep your eyes on the prize, bucko!

Harry: Whoa, not that! Why would I want to measure a fort?

Harry: You just don't listen, do you? That's not your target!

Harry: (after approximately seven minutes into the mission) We don't have much time! Hurry!

Harry: (after approximately nine minutes into the mission) We're almost out of time! Get it over with!

Harry: (if the player fires one missile) Now don't shoot, no matter what!

Harry: (if the player fires two missiles) I told you, don't fire at 'em!!

Harry: (if the player fires three missiles) Are you listening to me? No firing!

[mission fails if all four missiles are fired and Harry will say the following line]

Harry: Mission failed... She's gonna wring our necks. Let's go back.

Harry: (if the player's health drops to 50%) Watch it! You're taking too much fire!

Harry: (if the player's health drops to 25%) Oh no, now what? The fuselage is breaking up!

Harry: (each time the player locks onto a hatch) Now measuring! (when nearly finished measuring a hatch) Just a little more... (when the player stops locking onto a hatch too soon) Wait, I'm not done yet! One more time...

Harry: (after he finishes measuring one hatch) Okay, one down, four to go.

Harry: (when the player locks onto a hatch that has already been measured) No, not that one. I already measured it.

Harry: (after he finishes measuring two hatches) Okay, two down, three to go.

Harry: (after he finishes measuring three hatches) Okay, three down, two to go.

Harry: (after he finishes measuring four hatches) Okay, four down, one to go.

[after Harry finishes measuring all five hatches, the following two lines will be said]

Harry: Okay, that's the last one. Good job. Let's see... according to her orders... Get out as fast as you can. And don't die! ...Aww, that's sweet. Doesn't matter where, just get out of this airspace.

Donald: Running away? That might not be a bad idea. Did you get the information? That's the key to who lives and who dies. There's no way we're going down here! Tell them that!

[mission ends once the player leaves the battlefield after measuring all the hatches]

Debriefing[]

[in the PAL version, if this mission was completed for the first time, the following dialogue will be said]

Rick: [smiles] Man! What a crazy mission. I thought I was done for!

Amelia: Good work out there! That really must have been difficult.

Harry: [smiles] Hey miss, take a closer look at his face. Does that look like an expression of fear? He loves kicking the crap out of the enemy.

Amelia: Really?

Rick: [delightfully] Shoot, was it that obvious? But you know, speed is everything for a flying machine!

Amelia: Yes...I see...

Rick: And flying solo is great. Then you don't to[sic] wait up for the slowpokes! And there's nothing like making that speedy escape!

Amelia: Is that so...

Harry: [frowns] Miss, you don't have to try to understand. Him and the old man just have some weird hobbies, you know?

Rick: [angry] Weird hobbies?! Hey, whatever, man. You just have bad taste. And to me, that's weird! Birds fly circles around us. Hovering in places? Insects beat us on that one. Could a human outmaneuver a bird?

Harry: Give it a break. I know where you're going with this...

Rick: Could a human outmaneuver a bird?

Harry: [sighs] ...Nope. I guess not.

Rick: [delightfully] Right?! And that's exactly why man has always been transfixed by speed. [turns neutral] I set my heart on becoming a pilot when I saw my first air show. There was this speed contest for military planes...

Harry: [annoyed] Oh, boy! How many times do I have to hear this story?! The contest made you dream of piloting the faster warplane ever, right?

Rick: Yes! And the amazing thing is? With this plane, I'll achieve that very goal! It's a dream come true!

Harry: [sadly] If only you knew how much trouble it was procuring this damn thing. I'm hardly breaking even here, buster!

Rick: Sure, but thanks to me, the reconnaissance mission was a success! Don't be too hard on me, now.

Harry: [calms down and grins] You have a point. Whatever you like. So, you are going to buy it, right? I hope you're willing to pay a pretty penny.

Amelia: [delightfully] Oh, that's right...Well, Lilia told me that, as a bonus for completing the mission, the plane would be complimentary.

Harry: [angry] What?!

Amelia: [smiles] The Delta Squadron will be purchasing that plane. Here are the documents.

Harry: [displeased] This is practically giving it away, miss?! You can't expect me to do business at this price...

Rick: [delightfully] First they let me fly circles around the enemy, and now this plane! God, this it the best day of my life!

Harry: Gimme a break! It's the worst day of mine!

[in the PAL version, if the mission was completed again in a new game plus, the following dialogue will be said. This dialogue is also said in the NTSC-U version regardless of whether the mission was completed for the first time or not]

Rick: [delightfully] Man, I think I might like this recon business! Amelia, could I ask you a favor?

Amelia: Er, sure, what is it?

Rick: If there's ever a need for a solo recon mission, I would appreciate it if you gave me first chance at it.

Amelia: Um, sure...

Harry: [frowns] I guess Rick has overturned a new leaf.

Rick: [smiles] Yeah, you know, I never imagined this would be such an exhilarating mission.

Harry: [sadly] ...Rick, my man, you're a true junkie.

Rick: [delightfully] Wow, do you really think so?!

Harry: Shall we go, miss? I'm not getting anywhere with this guy.

Amelia: Um, yes, sir!

Rick: [smiles] See you two later, then!

[transitions to O.C.C. side in their meeting room. The following dialogue does not change regardless of whether this mission was completed for the first time or not in any version of the game]

Donald: ...

Sergei (referred to as ? at first): [offscreen] I believe you are Donald Chan?

Donald: And who are you?

Sergei (no longer referred to as ?): [appears onscreen and is grinning] I am Sergei Kinski of the Merv Alliance. This is my subordinate Albert Ungar.

Donald: I remember that name. You're that Merv "Emperor", and that's the name of your gifted successor.

Albert: [smiles and folds his arms] It's a[sic] honor to hear that from the "fighting machine". By the way, I heard a reconnaissance place was spotted?

Donald: Yes. It was a single plane, and we pursued him, but we failed, and he escaped unscathed.

Sergei: [frowns] Don't let it get you down. We can make up for it with kills in the air battles.

Donald: Yes. But if the recon plane escaped, then they know the location of the Kotor stronghold. We can anticipate an attack.

Albert: [frowns] We must immediately strengthen our defenses.

Donald: Indeed.

Francine (referred to as ? at first): [offscreen] Now I get it! That's why we were invited.

Donald: Who's that?

Francine (no longer referred to as ?): [appears onscreen and is smiling] I believe this is the first time we've met. I'm Francine Davout, and this is my butler, Jake.

Jake: It's a pleasure.

Donald: [intrigued] Hmm. The lady from from the Ecbatana Aviation Army, are you? I have heard about your achievements. You are highly skilled.

Francine: It is an honor to heard that. I've heard of your famous nickname. [delightfully] Well, everybody, it certainly is amazing to see the greatest OCC pilots come together all at once like this! This must be to get us motivated to face the enemy's main force! I'm glad the OCC still has a flair for style!

Donald: [mildly amused] We are soldiers; we followed our orders. No more and no less. Styles plays no part in it.

Francine: [smiles] My, aren't we the straight-laced type. But you'll never create a masterpiece battle with an attitude like that.

Jake: Miss, don't you have to report?

Francine: [nervous] Oh, I guess you're right. Thank goodness someone among us can stand to be such a stickler for the rules!

Jake: [irritated] Excuse me, miss, but a military ceases to function without procedure.

Francine: [calms down and smiles] Yes, yes, I know! Just hold on. Hiya Emperor -- and your successor. My name is Francine Davout.

Sergei: [grins] A pleasure. I'm Sergei of the Merv Alliance.

Albert: [smiles and folds his arms] Nice to meet you, Celestial of Ecbatana. My name is Albert Ungar.

Francine: I'm sorry I'm in such as rush. Let's talk over tea after we drive the EDAF back.

Albert: I look forward to it.

Francine: [delightfully] Well, I must be going now! [leaves]

Jake: [turns neutral] ... [leaves]

Donald: [turns neutral] I need to head to the hangar. I have some maintenance to take care of. I'm counting on solid teamwork once the mission starts. [leaves]

Sergei: [offscreen and only in NTSC-U version] Understood. Until then. [in both versions, he appears onscreen with his neutral expression and says the following line] So, rival aces from each of the militias are finally called together? The brass must be expecting quite a battle.

Albert: That will make a prime opportunity to raise our status. Let's do it, Commander!

Sergei: [smiles] You're absolutely right. Let's go, Albert!
