High-Velocity Recon Planes is the fourth mission in the original Airforce Delta. As the name suggests, it involves pursuing and destroying two of the fastest recon planes in the world; the infamous SR-71.

Briefing

Our ground forces have almost completed their removal of landed enemy troops.

We have plans to attempt landing of our own^[sic] in hostile territory, but it is highly probable that the enemy's high-velocity reconnaissance planes will give them the means to detect our landing site.

Your mission is to neutralize these high-velocity reconnaissance planes.

Because their speed gives them a high degree of invulnerability during flight, you will make your attack during the recon planes' aerial rendezvous with the fueling jet.

Walkthrough

Fitting that we just unlocked the MiG-31, isn't it? Needless to say, that plane is by far your best friend in this level. Although even it cannot catch up to the Blackbirds at full speed, it can easily catch up once they are forced to slow down to rendezvous with the Stratotankers.

Ignore the other enemies. Unless you're a madman^{he's the one who makes the walkthrough videos for these pages, by the by!}, going after the other enemy planes is just setting you up to fail. You can shoot down the Stratotankers if you want, but focus on the Blackbirds! The window of time to shoot them down is not big by any stretch of the imagination.

But all in all, this mission is, fittingly, quite fast. It's over and done with in the span of just a few minutes, especially if you know what you're doing.

Trivia

• This is the only time in the series you have to shoot down an SR-71 Blackbird.
• Every single enemy appears in pairs in this level.
• When picking a medium-speed aircraft, the Blackbirds fly in medium speed to escape the battle zone which extends a little duration of the mission.
• When picking a slower aircraft, the Blackbirds fly very slow to escape the battle zone which extends the duration of the mission.
