The MANBOU-J (a misspelling of "Manbow", and known as the M.B.W.-189 Sun-Fish in Airforce Delta Storm) is a Konami Legacy plane that appears in the PAL and NTSC-J versions of Airforce Delta Storm and all versions of Airforce Delta Strike. It was featured as the pilot ship in the obscure Japan-only MSX2 shoot'em up Space Manbow.

Design[]

The MANBOU-J has a nigh-identical appearance in both games. It resembles its namesake, a gigantic mambo fish, in design; it is one of the largest playable craft in the series, being unbelievably tall. It has a curved, very thin body with two small wings jutting from the sides, and several tall "wings" jutting from the top of it. It has four engines aligned vertically, and a mouth-like apparatus that spits out the aircraft's projectiles. It is a watery-blue color with white trim.

Performance[]

Airforce Delta Storm[]

An interesting aircraft; its stats, like other Konami-based craft, are above average all around. However, it has the worst mobility out of the Konami craft, being only average overall. It also has a very strange shape which can make it nigh-impossible to use in some missions like Falling Down. The fact it costs a whopping 2 million credits isn't doing it any favors either. It's also only available in the PAL and NTSC-J version.

Airforce Delta Strike[]

A far inferior showing, all stats have been horribly nerfed into the ground. The MANBOU-J went from a relatively okay, if awkwardly sized aircraft to an awkwardly sized aircraft with awful stats and bad weapons. It only uses rockets to attack with and has terrible stats to go along with it (Which makes it worse than the other Konami Legacy rocket planes), and its special weapon is basically a bomb version of the Wide Area Mass Destruction Rocket. Bomb version. Which means it can VERY easily blow you up alongside with your victim considering its limited range for being... Y'know. A BOMB. Absolute trash.

Trivia[]

  • The music that plays when this plane is used in Storm is two soundtracks from Space Manbow combined, the names of the soundtracks are "Battle Ship" and "Parallel Space".
    • When this plane is used in Strike, however, all bits of "Parallel Space" are removed from the soundtrack, leaving "Battle Ship" the only part of the soundtrack to play.
  • This is the most expensive plane in Airforce Delta Storm.
  • This is also the last plane listed in the aircraft list in the PAL and NTSC-J versions of Storm.
  • Although this plane is unlocked for free in Strike, this plane's price would technically be 780,000 credits due to how repair prices for planes are calculated (50% of the plane's cost to purchase, hundred-digit numbers rounded up).
  • This is the only Airforce Delta Storm plane whose appearance remains largely unchanged in Airforce Delta Strike.
  • In Storm, this plane along with the XF-0002 Phosphorus and XQ/U-2Bee Fatty has a longer missile range than other planes' (6000 feet/around 1800 meters over standard missile's 5000 feet/around 1500 meters).
