"You want speed? This puppy hits Mach 3 without afterburners. But banking is tough for amateurs and it's a little expensive."
Harry's description of this plane in the shop.

The XF-108 Rapier is an aircraft that only appears in Airforce Delta Strike, where it can be used by Rick Campbell.

Origin (Real-Life)[]

The XF-108 Rapier was a design for a North American interceptor craft that was intended to defend the country from supersonic Soviet bombers, and to achieve speed of Mach 3 (2,000 mph or 3,200 km/h). However, due to funding, the project barely got to the design phase, with only a wooden mockup being made. It was cancelled in 1959.

Design[]

The design of the Rapier takes a heavily isosceles-style delta wing formation. It also features a tall, vertical, all moving tail-fin. The fuselage is rather long, despite only sitting two. The wings feature plenty of dual-fuel tanks.

Performance[]

The Rapier is the fastest plane in the game, and likely the entire Airforce Delta series as well (With the possible exception of the non-playable SR-71s in High-Velocity Recon Planes). It can reach speeds up to over 2100 miles per hour. Its drawbacks lie in its poor handling, lack of a machine gun, low health, and ineffectiveness against ground targets. However, unlike most fighter jets, which usually have just 70 missiles (multirole fighters have 80), the Rapier has 150 missiles. Its special weapons are High-Maneuvering Air-to-Air Missile (HM-AAM).

Compared to the YF-12, a plane with very similar stats, this plane has a slightly higher top speed than the YF-12, has more missiles, the HM-AAM as opposed to the ML-AAM, and can be equipped to fly through space, but the YF-12 can roll better than this plane. The YF-12 also possesses Stealth capabilities, as well as superior attacking stats in Anti Air and Anti Ground.
