Briefing[]
Robert: Okay, looks like everyone's here. Let's get the briefing underway. Amelia?
Amelia: Yes, sir. Ballga Air Base, being built in our recently recaptured Area OB-43, is under attack. Construction is at a standstill. Here are your orders. Delta Elements 1 and 3 are to head to the base and wipe out all attacking bandits. That is all.
Alex: When are we supposed to go?
Lilia: Right away. We've scheduled this assignment to coincide with the start of their next attack. [smiles] If you leave now, you'll arrive right on time.
Ruth: Any more intel on the enemy?
Lilia: [turns neutral] No exact numbers, but considering the damage we've taken, I'd say they're very good at what they do. They're obviously well-trained with a brilliant commander.
John: [smiles] Hmph. Damn fancy bastards, eh? They'll make nice trophies, though.
Ken: [angry] Brilliant...a commander...
Jamie: [smiles] An ace, you mean. The bad guys are pulling out all the stops.
Lilia: It's no time for us to hold back, either. If it's completed, that air base will be right on the front. The enemy knows how important it is. Of course, we do, too. Remember, you'll be joined by fighters scrambled from our nearby carrier.
Rick: Wow, we need them to pitch in, too? This is gonna be one hell of a fight.
Lilia: [smiles] Yes, but however tough it gets, remember that you're fighting for all of our futures. Show them what you're made of!
Ruth: Roger!
Jamie: Ready, you guys? Let's hit the road!
Robert: All units, move out. Protect that base and our future security.
[briefing ends]
Mission[]
Operator: Radar signal! Enemy aircraft echo. Count is...a whole bunch!
Base Command: Why didn't you see them before?!
Operator: We didn't get the long-range radar set up in time!
Base Command: We'll hold them off until backup comes. We can't evacuate here now!
Operator: Radar signal! It's... It's Delta!
Base Command: Okay! Open a channel to Delta!
Operator: It is already open.
Base Command: This is Ballga Base. Request suppression of area aircraft.
Amelia: Roger. Nomad to all units. Eliminate enemy aircraft in Ballga airspace immediately.
Joker 1: Delta?! Okay, we're in! Joker crew, break and switch to new target! Engage!
Joker 2: Roger!
Maverick 1: Thank god! Delta is here! All Maverick units, prepare to engage! Let's go!
Maverick 2: Roger!
Operator: (after either 2 minutes have passed or 2 or 3 planes are shot down) Radar shows second enemy wave incoming!
Joker 1: Damn! A new guy?!
Sergei: I am Sergei Kinski of the Merv Alliance!
Ruth: (if not being played as) The Emperor?!
John: (if not being played as) Call him whatever you want. To me, he's just easy prey...
[if Jamie is not being played as, the following six lines will be said]
Sergei: An old prop plane? Is that you, Jones?
Jamie: Ha! Nice guess, you cross-eyed old fool!
Sergei: Ha ha ha! You never change!
Jamie: Nope! Never stop believin' in myself!
Sergei: Fine words, but they don't mean much when you lose!
Jamie: Hasn't happened yet!
Sergei: (after a couple of planes are shot down or if the planes weren't shot down from the start of the mission when Albert and Ellen appeared) Not yet. Just a little more time! Any minute now and they'll... (if shot down before the cutscene or after Albert and Ellen are shot down) No! That's the limit! Ejecting!
Operator: (after a few more planes are shot down) Radar shows second enemy wave incoming! What the...?! How many are there?
[cutscene begins]
Amelia: Nomad to all units! Enemy third wave approaching!
John: More trophies to collect...
[Albert's MiG-25PDS "Foxbat E", Ellen's Jian-Ji 10, and a MiG-29SMT "Fulcrum C" appear flying in formation]
Albert: All units, fan out and engage! [the MiG-29SMT "Fulcrum C" leaves the formation] Doll, you take the lead. I'll bring up the rear.
Ellen: Roger! [they spot Ken and pursue him]
Albert: Gotcha! That blue jet! It's you! Get ready for a rough landing!
Ken: ...Spare the threats.
Albert: Come on, then!
Ellen: Storm, this is Doll!
Ken: !! Ellen...that voice. Ellen, is that you?
Albert: Right, Doll! Don't let that one get away!
Ellen: Roger!
[cutscene ends]
Maverick: Whoa! These guys are fast!
Albert: (if Sergei was shot down before the cutscene) Damn! I was too late! (if Sergei is still in the mission after the cutscene) Commander, are you okay? (regardless of whether Sergei is shot down at this point or not, Albert will say the following line) You won't get off that easily with me!
Sergei: (if still in the mission after the cutscene) Is that Doll from the experiment?
Ellen: (if Sergei is still in the mission after the cutscene) The Emperor...?
Albert: (if Sergei is still in the mission after the cutscene) Just a messed up human!
Ken: (if not being played as) Is that...Ellen...?
Ruth: (if not being played as) Crow! Stay with it!
Ellen: I don't know anyone in the EDAF!
Ken: (if not being played as) You're...alive?
Albert: Our doll looks like she's in trouble. What's up?
Ellen: I've seen that flying somewhere before...
Albert: Doll! What are you looking at?!
Ellen: I don't know! I don't know!
Albert: Doll! Stick to orders!
Ellen: Why?! Why do I...?
Sergei: (if still in the mission after the cutscene) She's useful, but nothing more than a doll...
[the following six lines will be said if Ken moves away from Albert]
Albert: You in the blue jet! Fight me, dammit!
Ken: (if not being played as) Come on... What does one on one prove?
Sergei: (if still in the mission after the cutscene) Storm! Forget about that one!
Albert: Why won't you fight me?! Why not?!
Ken: (if not being played as) Let's just say the timing's not right...
Sergei: (if still in the mission after the cutscene) Forget him! Keep your eye on the big picture!
Rick: (if not being played as) Wow! Speedy!
Albert: (if Rick is not being played as) Ha! Finally someone who knows how to put on a little speed.
Sergei: (if still in the mission after the cutscene) It's time to teach you all a lesson!
Albert: (if Ellen is being targeted) Hey, over here! Why are you after our doll?!
Sergei: (if he is the first or second ace to be shot down after the cutscene) I can't push it anymore... Hulk, ejecting!
Albert: (if Sergei was shot down before him after the cutscene) Nobody rubs Hulk's face in the dirt! You'll pay!
Ellen: (if Sergei was shot down before her after the cutscene) Hulk...! Damn you! You'll pay for that!
Albert: (if he is the first or second ace to be shot down) No! The plane! Damn! Ejecting!
Sergei: (if he is still in the mission after the cutscene and Albert is shot down before him) Storm! If you're bailing out, we're...
Ellen: (if Albert is shot down before her) Even Storm's had to...
Ellen: (if she is the first or second ace to be shot down after the cutscene) Dammit! This is Doll! I'm damaged bad! Bailing out!
Sergei: (if Ellen is shot down before him after the cutscene) Roger! Time for revenge!
Albert: (if Ellen is shot down before him after the cutscene) You've taken down our commander? Now you'll really pay!
Albert: (if shot down after Sergei and Ellen are) Damn! I must be losing it...! Punching out!
Ellen: (if shot down after Sergei and Albert are) Damn! Can't hold it! Punching out!
[when a certain number of planes are shot down, the mission comes to an end]
Ellen: (if not shot down at this point) What happened? How did we lose? Oh, well, time to bug out!
Albert: (if not shot down at this point) Things are looking grim... Better pull out.
Sergei: (if not shot down at this point) Definitely time to clear out! It pains me, but we've got to disengage!
Amelia: The enemy has started to pull back. Don't pursue too far. We don't want any accidents.
Operator: Enemy craft have disappeared from radar. Enemy withdrawal confirmed.
Base Command: You really saved us. Thank you.

Debriefing[]
[if the mission was completed with a 3rd Element character, the following dialogue will take place]
[in hallway]
Ken: !! How could it be... ?! But...!
Ruth: Lieutenant Thomas?
Ken: !!
Ruth: What is it? You were acting strange during battle.
Ken: It shouldn't concern you. My stats are improving. You can't complain.
Lilia: [offscreen] Are you surprised that your ex-lover was fighting for the other side? Or that she came back from the dead?
Ken: !!
Ruth: ......Lilia! [Lilia then appears onscreen]
Lilia: After Amelia's report, we checked the checked the footage on your camera. Your moves are suspicious, Ken. So we had you checked out, Lieutenant Thomas. With a full background check.
Ken: What?
Lilia: Ken Thomas, former Space Army First Lieutenant. Stationed at the EDAF Space Station as a solo light spacecraft pilot.
Ruth: The Space Army? Lieutenant Thomas was a space pilot?
Lilia: Yes. He flew light craft in the Space Army and was a talented 2nd Lieutenant in the interceptor squadron. Until one day...
Ruth: One day?
Ken: Stop it, Lilia.
Lilia: Until the day OCC declared war on EDAF.
Ken: Stop! Lilia! Don't do this!!
Ruth: Lieutenant Thomas?!
Lilia: Just as OCC declared war, they attacked the Space Army headquarters, an orbiting space station. The station was wiped out.
Ken: [stressed] Stop it!!
Lilia: And every last man in the Space Army died in the attack. Isn't that right, First Lieutenant Valentine?
Ruth: Yes, that is how the news reported it. So you mean to say that was a false report?
Lilia: Bingo! In truth, they managed to save just one man, our First Lieutenant Thomas, who was returned to Earth after his rescue. He was on secret reserve until he changed to the air force to fight on the front. For political reasons, he was sent to Delta.
Ken: ...
Lilia: Ken is the only survivor of the Space Army. Or so we thought. Tell us, Ken, about the girlfriend you had?
Ken: Stop it!
Lilia: Her name was Ellen McNichol. She flew the 2nd plane in your Element. The military records say she was killed in action.
Ruth: No...Lilia, you don't mean that she was one of the enemies encountered today?
Lilia: I imagine that is exactly right. We detected her voice over the receiver.
Ken: Ellen is dead! She was sucked into space right before my eyes! And I could do nothing to save her! That's why I...
Lilia: Joined Delta, to get your revenge? Please, Ken, that's such a soap opera. Now we have to deal with the traitor, Ellen McNichol.
Ken: ...
Lilia: Shoot her down, Ken. It is your duty.
Ken: !!
Ruth: Lilia! You can't be saying this!
Lilia: To her, you are the enemy. So why show her any mercy? Shoot her down like you would any other, Ken!
Ken: ...
Lilia: It's kill or be killed. There is no room for love stories in wartime. If she is the enemy, she must be destroyed.
Ken: ...
Lilia: Be ready to kill her before your next encounter. That is, if you want to survive. That is all. [leaves]
Ruth: Lieutenant Thomas...
Ken: Please, I need to be alone until the next mission. I need to think... [leaves]
Ruth: What can I do? Please, father, help me...
[if the mission was completed with a 1st Element character, the following dialogue will take place]
[in meeting room]
Jamie: The "Emperor," huh?
Alex: Why're you looking so gloomy, Lead?
Jamie: Hm? Oh, hello Alex. It's nothing to worry about.
Alex: Well, now you've really got me worried! Did you mention the Emperor? Did you have you[sic] first encounter with him today?
Jamie: Fool! Don't you know my military record? The Emperor and I once jockeyed for first position!
Alex: First position as a weirdo?
Jamie: No! As the best pilot! But it was never settled, since we were in different militaries.
Alex: Wow, Lead, you were something else. But wait, the Emperor flies a jet, right?
Jamie: Well, yes.
Alex: Obviously you've been doing the prop-plane thing all along. So back when you were rivals, he flew a prop-plane, too?
Jamie: That's right. But then he switched right over to a jet, and before I knew it, they called him the Emperor of the Merv.
Alex: But you couldn't handle the change, so you became a prop-plane instructor, and finally got sidelined to the Delta Squadron?
Jamie: Fool! I came here only because Robert begged me to! And it ain't that I couldn't handle it! I can fly a jet along with the rest of them! I just like prop-planes, you hear me?
Alex: Well, if you say so. But you must feel a little left behind by the Emperor?
Jamie: What?
Alex: That's why you were sighing back there, right? You know, kinda feeling sad and left alone, without your rival and all.
Jamie: ...
Alex: I mean, I'm sorry if I'm wrong...
Jamie: Sad? Yeah, I guess I am kind of sad. Sad that my old rival switched over to a jet. And I can't break old habits.
Alex: I guess I'm too young to really know, but I've found that we laymen are better off leaving the thinking to others.
Jamie: Why you?! Are you calling me a layman?!
Alex: Am I wrong?
Jamie: Hmph! Never thought I'd get a lecture from you. But don't worry -- we'll be square if you buy me a drink.
Alex: Fine by me. Shall we ask Rick to come along, too?
Jamie: Sounds great!
[transitions to OCC side in the area where people go to speak to Navigator who is unseen in debriefings. The following dialogue does not change regardless of whether the mission was completed with a 1st or 3rd Element character]
Albert: [offscreen] Albert Ungar and Doll Ellen reporting.
Navigator: ENTER. [Albert and Ellen appear onscreen] GOOD WORK, CITIZEN ALBERT. HOW IS DOLL NOW?
Albert: No problems detected. For a young pilot, I think she shows high potential.
Navigator: I SEE. SO WE CAN CONSIDER IT A SUCCESS?
Albert: Yes. Please check the report for the details.
Navigator: UNDERSTOOD. AS FOR DOLL, YOU ARE TO USE HER IN YOUR SQUADRON.
Albert: In our squadron?
Navigator: YES. NOW YOU ARE POSITIONED ON THE FRONT LINE, MAKING THE PERFECT BATTLE GROUNDS FOR DOLL.
Albert: ...
Navigator: IF THIS GOES WELL, I WILL CONSIDER PROMOTING THE STATUS OF THE MERV PEOPLE.
Albert: Understood. I will be going.
[they head to their meeting room and Ellen smiles]
Albert: What is it, Doll? You haven't said a word.
Ellen: It's nothing; I still get a little nervous meeting with the higher-ups.
Albert: [smiles] You almost seem human when you talk like that.
Ellen: [frowns] Hmm?
Albert: [frowns] (This whole Doll Project is enough to make me vomit... Who would've expected the day to come that we'd use mind control on POWs to unleash them as robot soldiers?)
Ellen: [delightfully] Lead, if you have a moment, I would like to ask you to help me go through some aerial maneuvers.
Albert: (I know this is dirty work, but it's for the advancement of my people.) [smiles and folds his arms] Very well. Prepare to take off.
Ellen: [smiles] Yes, sir! I'll get going, then! [leaves]
Albert: [frowns] But it almost seemed like Pale Blue knew about Doll. But how could that be?
