Within Mars, interstellar Candil cruise missiles have burrowed underground, and are moving to destroy a base located within the planet. 2nd Element is deployed to destroy the missiles, despite the monumental danger present, and must fly through the underground network of caverns to pursue and destroy the missiles before they destroy the base. 2nd Element is not perturbed, and agree to do the job, stating that if they don't, Delta's reputation would be shot. They then proudly go out on the job to destroy the cruise missiles.
Firstly, do your damndest to avoid the R-Mites present in this level. They don't simply fire their normal attacks at you; they have the same "fly up, fly straight" missile type that the original R-Mites possessed. It IS possible to avoid it by approaching at a very wide angle (as in, having the R-Mite visible literally at one end of the screen as you fly forward), but this is very dangerous and risky considering the narrow confines of the caverns. It's not like you really get any money for doing this mission anyways, so getting the kills is just for the sake of it.
Secondly, the Candil missiles travel straight towards the observation base; they are relatively slow, so it should be fairly easy to approach them before they reach the base. They slow down even more as they burrow through the rocks, so catching them is no problem. There are only eight of them in total, as well. They spawn only a few at a time, with more appearing as time goes on, so bear that in mind.
You get no credits for completing this level. Instead, you get the completion medal for whatever character you use to complete this mission, as well as the ability to purchase the associated post-game unlock plane (The F-101B Voodoo for Holst, and the Su-32FN for Brian). If this is the first time you've completed the game, you unlock the VIC VIPER for free, and if this is the first time you've completed the game as a 2nd Element character, you unlock the TwinBee for free, both on a new-game plus.
